Conditional Cash Transfers: Nigerian Government Supports 15 Million Households with ₦25,000 Payments
The Federal Government has announced plans to provide conditional cash transfers to 15 million households, aiming to impact around 75 million Nigerians. This initiative was detailed by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Nentawe Yilwatda, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.
Each household is set to receive ₦25,000 monthly, with payments made three times annually. According to Yilwatda, this effort is part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategy to reduce economic struggles for vulnerable groups in the country.
“The President is focused on implementing policies to ease the difficulties faced by those most in need. By reaching 15 million households, we estimate this program will benefit approximately 75 million people, based on an average household size of five,” he stated.
So far, five million individuals have been included in the program. However, only 1.4 million of them have been registered with digital identities, a requirement set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to enhance accountability. Efforts are underway to clean up the social register and expand the program to include more beneficiaries, especially those without access to formal banking systems.
To ensure the funds are used effectively, women are being prioritized as household representatives, with the goal of directly benefiting children and other vulnerable family members.
The program had been paused in January following allegations of corruption but was resumed in February with plans to incorporate an additional 12 million households into the initiative.
